What is Reformer Pilates and Why Is It Good for You?

What is Reformer Pilates?

Pilates was first developed in the early 20th century by its creator Joseph Pilates with increasing popularity over the last two decades, the Pilates method has been used as a form of exercise and holistic health (Sorosky et al. 2008). Reformer Pilates uses the same principles as traditional Pilates however uses a special reformer apparatus, the use of this apparatus can make for a more dynamic and well-rounded workout due to the nature of the machine. This is due to the ability to alter the resistance using springs at the base of the machine as well as other features such as the carriage, ropes and pulleys which are all attached.

What are the similarities and differences between Pilates, Reformer Pilates and Clinical Pilates?

Mat Pilates has a primary focus of using one’s own body weight to complete exercises, this differs to Reformer Pilates. Rather than using solely your bodyweight the Reformer uses springs to change the resistance to then help tailor your exercise to your specific needs such as focusing more on motor control versus building strength, creating a more versatile workout.

Clinical Pilates can use a combination of both mat and Reformer Pilates with the added knowledge and expertise of an experienced clinician based on physiotherapy training to help inform the exercises selected specific to the patient and incorporates physiotherapy treatment.

What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates provides many benefits for both the mind and body including:

●       Improved flexibility and mobility

●       Targeting small and large muscle groups

●       Increasing core stability

●       Increase muscle strength and endurance

●       Improved weight loss

●       Improves posture and balance

●       Improved muscle tone

●       Promotes relaxation

●       Promotes controlled breathing and increases concentration

What are the disadvantages of Reformer Pilates?

There aren’t too many disadvantages to name for Reformer Pilates. It is deemed a very safe and effective form of exercise for anyone, especially because of its versatility. One notable disadvantage is that not everyone has access to their own Reformer Pilates Studio to replicate the exact exercises at home. However, if you would like to continue practicing on your days off from the studio our physiotherapists would be happy to consult you for mat Pilates based exercises you can tick off at home until your next class!

Can anyone do Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates does not discriminate! Anyone can take up reformer Pilates as part of their exercise routine. Reformer Pilates can be used to incorporate as part of your gym routine, during pregnancy, post-partum, to improve general fitness and strength, and help to manage lower back pain. No matter your goal, Reformer Pilates can be of benefit to you. A recent study published by Roller et al. (2018), found the significant effects Pilates has on older adults in reducing falls risk, improving static and dynamic balance, functional mobility and flexibility.

Is Reformer Pilates good for beginners?

Reformer Pilates is excellent for beginners. At KRP, we offer 1:1 consultation for anyone who wants to start their reformer Pilates journey. In our 1:1 consults our expert physiotherapists will spend time with you to familiarise you with the reformer apparatus and how it works as well as safe exercises within your ability and to discuss what your personal goals are. Once you are comfortable and form some experience you have the choice to join classes in our brand new KRP Reformer Pilates Studio.

What to Wear to Reformer Pilates?

Bring with you a drink bottle and small towel, as well as wearing:

●                   Stretchy pants

●                   Fitted leggings/shorts

●                   Light layer tops/singlets

●                   Grippy socks

You might want to bring a light jumper to wear until you warm up (which won’t take long), especially during our lovely Melbourne winters … brrr!
